Of course not.

Pricing depends on what kind of car or truck.

its time to take this car to the junk yard and LEAVE IT!

sorry- get a better (newer) car!Ok i have a oldsmobile 1980 delta88 and its a v8 5.7 but it runs real slow just changed spark plugs?
Check the timing and how much timing error there is due to the slack in the timing chain if it is worn out. Put headers and dual exhausts on it for extra horsepower. Put a K%26amp;N air filter in it for a little more power.Ok i have a oldsmobile 1980 delta88 and its a v8 5.7 but it runs real slow just changed spark plugs?
Check everything in your emissions aka Air filter, Mass air sensor things like that. Also make sure your timing is correct, if its a little bit off it causes the %26quot;car lagging%26quot;. You might also want to check your fuel filter because if you changed your spark plugs its a %26quot;general%26quot; rule to change your fuel filter. Also, you can check out some of your sensors. Oh yes and one more! aha sorry, it could also be your Idle Air Control Valve! That's what creates your idle, and if that's bad, you'll have bad pick-up (example: takes more than 20 seconds to get to 35 miles per hour)Ok i have a oldsmobile 1980 delta88 and its a v8 5.7 but it runs real slow just changed spark plugs?
Did you replace all components of the system? A bad cap/rotor/points (if your car has all of those) will dramatically affect performance.

Consider having the exhaust system checked. If you don't have proper back-pressure then you may experience a loss of performance.

Also, run fuel with the proper octane rating. If you're running regular unleaded, try stepping up to mid-grade. You may even see an improvement in fuel economy by doing this...which will help to off-set the added expense.Ok i have a oldsmobile 1980 delta88 and its a v8 5.7 but it runs real slow just changed spark plugs?
OTHER PROBLEMS SUCH AS A CLOGED FUEL FILTER OR A STUCK CHOKE OR POSSIBLY A BAD FUEL PUMP. ALSO CHECK AIR FILTER. IF NON OF THE ABOVE HELP CHECH TIMING PROBLEMS DISTRIBUTOR CAP ROTOR SPARK PLUG WIRES ECT, 1 OTHER POSS IS A PLUGED CATALITIC CONVERTER.Ok i have a oldsmobile 1980 delta88 and its a v8 5.7 but it runs real slow just changed spark plugs?
Changing out the air filter, fuel filter, and checking the timing might bring up your horsepower a little. Your engine might have many miles on it and an overhaul might be right for you. The rings and your cylinder compression might have something to do with it too.

  • My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?

I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus. %26quot;I%26quot; know to only take off one spark plug/wire at a time but he took them all off and of course is trying to figure out how they go. But when he was doing this, a small fire started. We poured water on it, but I'm concerned about damage and what started it. HELP?My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?
the engine will back flow the fire if you don't have the spark plugs in the right order what causes this is it ignites in the cylinder when the intake valve is open and ignites the fuel as its coming in if no hoses were burnt or anything on the outside of the motor you should be fine just get the correct firing order and put them on right and you should be fine

PS it can burn as it kicks the fuel backMy husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?
Should not have been anything under the hood to catch fire. Tow it to a professional to diagnose-it sounds like he knocked something loose. As far as how bad the damage is-kinda hard to see from here....................................My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?
Should not of dumped water in there like that. I would take it to the shop but if little bit of water went in the motor .You can get a manual or maybe even the owners manual you have and it should tell you the order the plugs go.

Along with new wires you should get a distributor cap and rotor. About the wiggly cylinder I don't know what it could be but i dont think it will be a problem. How to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?
You need to buy some new spark plug wires. You should get new wires every time you change the plugs. How to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?
use a pair of plyers to crimp that part tighter so it grabs the head of the plug good and tight,, be real careful not to put a hole in the rubber with the plyers, if your scared u will ruin the rubber use an old rag around the wire and grip it that way,, dont put to much force on it or u wont get the plug in it no more,, take a cpl times to get it right,,and when u replace the plugs its a good idea to use antiseize on the threads and conductive grease on the park plug boot to aid in the next removal,,ArtHow to change spark plugs!!! Trouble shooting?
No thats not a problem . Your wires may be bad but even when there new they can be hard to get on. If you just push hard on the wires you will feel it click and it wont be loose at all.

If you can see the clamps in the wires sticking out it wont be a problem. If you damaged the wire to bad it will just not work and it wont fire off that plug but it will be fine. Wires will last a long time so it will probably be fine.

dont see the spark plugs or wires on the engineHow to change the spark plugs on a 2001 pontiac grand am?
You need 4 spark plugs. They are located under the cover on the top of the engine. Remove the 4 bolts (13mm) on the cover and carefully unplug the harness on the end of the cover to your right. Pull the cover straight up (you will have some resistance). Before removing the plugs blow out any dirt and debris so that it can not fall into the engine with the plugs removed. Then remove the plugs, I remove and replace one plug at a time. After all 4 plugs have been replaced carefully put the cover back in place making sure the plug wires are in position. Install the 4 bolts and plug in the wire harness.

NOTE: You may want to replace the spark plug wires while you have it unassembled. About $20.00 at a parts store.

Also, do not over tighten the plugs or the bolts on the cover.

If you had a bad ignition control module you wouldn't get any spark from the coil at all. Your problem lies in the wires. Either the coil wire is not inserted all the way at both ends which is why there is no power at the distributor or some of the wires are switched. I am thinking the wires are switched or not inserted all the way and are not making a good contact. Sure to make sure they are all making contacts.

I need help understanding how to change the spark plugs on a 99 Cad Catera. Just lifting the hood is no help. It appears the wires and plugs are covered up somehow. Please assist if you can. I want to avoid taking it to a dealership if I can.Changing spark plugs on a 99 Cad Catera?
The spark plugs are located under the upper plenum on this vehicle. When you open the hood there is a large plastic cover to be removed, the upper plenum is an aluminum item typically attached by 10 to 12 bolts. Once the plenum is removed you will have access to the spark plugs. The spark plugs are platinum and expensive. It is typical to only have to replace them after 100,000 miles. If you have less you may be able to have the Fuel(induction)system service that will remove the carbon build up. Not to sound degrading but I would leave it to a professional mechanic on this ride.Changing spark plugs on a 99 Cad Catera?

Car won't start. Changed fuel injector, fuel line, distributor cap & module & wires, sparks changed too HELP?

I started having trouble starting my truck a few months ago and it would take about 5 or more turns of the key to get it started once it did start I didn't have any problems about a month ago I had taken it to a shop and they told me it was my fuel injector so I got that replaced and fuel lines also. It still did the same thing, It ran a little smoother but still hard to turn over after sitting a while, anyway I was driving it yesterday and stopped at about 5 places and the last stop it didn't want to turn over even after running a while I sat for about 10 minutes and it eventually turned over, I parked it in the garage and decided to change the distributor, rotor, %26amp; wire's, the spark plugs were changed in the summer, After doing all that it still won't start at ALL. I had a friend to check the gas valve on top and it shot out when he pressed the value when turning the key, he says he thinks my timing is out, What do you think and how can I check that to see if it really is the timing?Car won%26039;t start. 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4. I changed the spark plugs on it just as a routine maintenance item. How important or critical is it that the spark plug wires be changed also? They are not damaged, or cracked and the inside that snaps on the spark plugs are fine. The car has 91,000 miles on it and they were the original spark plugs so i would assume they are the original wires as well. If they are still ok is it nessecary to change them or can I leave them as is? Thanks2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?
As a rule, I change the wires when I change the spark plugs. The wires internally deteriorate, so they need to be changed.2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?
If there is no damage to the insulation or the connectors on your plug wires and the car is running ok, then you don't need to change the plug wires yet.2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT, I changed the spark plugs?
Run the engine in near darkness, and then look and listen. If you see little electrical arcs, or hear a snap-crack, there is high-voltage electrical leakage. Of course, running the engine at idle doesn't exercise the ignition system very hard, so you can add something to the test by spraying the plug wire ends with clean water from a household spray bottle.

Another test: With a jumper wire, ground the metal shank of a screwdriver that has a well-insulated handle. Then, run the tip of the screwdriver along the length of each wire and all around at the coil and plug boots. This will often produce an arc from the wire to the screwdriver.

Now look at the wires under good lighting. If they are damaged by abrasion, oil-soaked, cut, burned from contact with the exhaust, or have a dried-out look with heat cracks, it definitely shouldn't be a surprise if you see arcs in the dark under some conditions. However, if they look bad but there are no arcs, do a resistance check.

A conventional plug wire has a resistance of 10,000 to 15,000 ohms per foot of length--if it's measurably higher, the wire probably is bad. An absolutely failed wire will have a hairline break somewhere, and the resistance will be infinity.

How do I change the spark plugs in a 2005 Honda Civic VP?

I knew how to change the spark plugs in my other vehicles, but this engine has them set up differently. I'm used to wires being connected from the distributor cap to the plug itself, but on this engine, I still haven't found the wires or distr cap. I know where the spark plugs themselves are, but there is this cylinder thats about 9 in or so long that you have to unscrew and pull out from on top of the plugs. I have a long enough extension to be able to get them out from the bottom of this hole, but it looks to me as if the inside of this tube is copper and its very smooth. Is it b/c its new and never been worked on, or do i need a special tool to keep from scratching it and losing conductivity??? PLEASE HELP!! also if you know where the distributor cap and wires are, please let me know!!!!How do I change the spark plugs in a 2005 Honda Civic VP?
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS ON A CAR THAT NEW. THERE ARE NO WIRES BECAUSE YOUR CAR HAS COIL PACKS BASICALLY ON TOP OF EACH PLUG. THE PART THAT IS THE CYLINDER. JUST PULL THESE OFF AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CHANGE THE PLUGS.How do I change the spark plugs in a 2005 Honda Civic VP?
the factories of newer automobiles are trying to not loose money and the main way of them loosing money is people doing things themselfs. if you buy yourself a repair manual for it. It should show you where everything is and how to replace them. if not you might have to take it to a repair shop and spend a bunch of unessasary money. sorry I'm use to old cars

but there are not wires just to let you know so you won't find them but I don't know if they do have distributors.

Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?

i decided to change the spark plugs in my bonneville this week. ive taken off the front four and one of the back ones. they are so difficult to take off by themselves and the last two are very hard to reach too. i spent over an hour on the back one. the front took a long time also. is this normal. the plug wires are like a thick rubber and have a metal shield around them. the engines is a 3800 V6 not supercharged. how can i get these wires off more easily?

thanksChanging spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?
I've had to change many of thoes (I work in a garage) and they still cause problems. Are you just pulling the wires off with your hands or a spark plug wire puller? by pulling them by hand you have a chance of breaking the wires inside and damaging the wires. Also the wires should be looked at and replaced if needed. Same with the cap and rotor (if not and electric distributor, I can't remember on that engine) as for the last two plugs, take spark plug puller pliers and bend the end to a 90 degree angle, I did that to the ones in my tool box, and it works a lot better. and that metal shield is a heat shield, so when you get them off, make sure you put them back on, or else you can damage with wires with the heat of the exhause manifold. Also, there should be 3 plugs in the front, and 3 in the back, so the front four?Changing spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?

OK are you ready? There is a solid engine strut mounted from the engine to a front mount. Get a coat hanger ready, remove the nut and bolts on the BOth sides of the mount and remove the strut. You will need a pry bar or something close to it to now pull the motor to the front of the car, engine will move a good 3 -4 inches. I think at this point yo will understand what the hanger is for, if you have help would nice for them to loop the hanger through the mount holes that you just moved to hold the engine forward. this will give you as much room as you can get. Good Luck to you. DennisChanging spark plugs in 2001 pontiac bonneville?

How much to change spark plugs?

I have a 1989 toyota celica st and I am looking to put it platinum spark plugs to make it last longer. Do I have to get new wires too? How much would it be for just these two?How much to change spark plugs?
platinum spark plugs can range in price anywhere from 2 dollars a piece to 8.. personally the brand u choose as your replacement would be the same as the wires.. yes the spark plugs and wires should be replaced at the same time to be able to adjust and operate the same as they wear as the years go by.. same as replacing oil filter along with new oil.. your probably looking anywhere in the range of 30 to 120 depending on how much your wanting to spendHow much to change spark plugs?
plugs'll probly be $20 and wires'll probly be another $20How much to change spark plugs?
go with iridium plugs, ngk makes them they are better. you do not have to replace your wires. make sure the plugs are gapped correctly.the ngk plugs are about 14-20 a plug. but worth it on the small amount of increased fuel economy. i didn't change the wires on my trans am.if you can do it yourself or ask some one to do it. you will get ripped off almost anywhere. i got quoted $285 to do the plugs in my trans am. that wasn't even counting the price of the plugs. How much to change spark plugs?
If you don't have any miss firing or rough idle I wouldn't worry about the plug wires just change the plugs but use some anti seize on the threads of the plugs. This keeps them from seizing in the threads in the head of the engine. But make sure you gap the plugs before installing them. And make sure of the torque when putting them in and not to over tightening them because aluminum heads with spark plug holes will strip out them threads.Use a torque wrench if you don't have one borrow one from some body if you can't buy one from a parts store and ask what the torque should be on the plugs. How much to change spark plugs?
I put Bosch twin electrode platinums in my Corolla 6 years ago and they're still good. I've ,since then , driven to Canada, Disneyland in Orange Co, Keystone Colorado and Vail Colorado, plus daily commute in the SanFrancisco Bay Area. I can talk about 60,000 miles on a set of platinum plugs and the original plug wires. Invest $10- $15 on those spark plugs and don't worry for the next 6 years at least. How much to change spark plugs?
If you haven't replaced the ignition wires, cap and rotor with Denso or NGK parts within the past 50,000 miles you'd better add that to the %26quot;to do%26quot; list along with Denso or NGK platinum or longer lasting iridium spark plugs. Do not attempt to second-guess or re-gap iridium spark plugs. The center electrode is so small and hard it will spall off or break if you attempt to do so.

Why is my plug wire sparking through the boot?

Ok, I have no idea what to do now. My spark plug wires are arcing through the boot? I have changed the spark plugs, changed the plug wires 3 times, and changed the coil pack, nothing helped? Would putting some %26quot;High Heat%26quot; silicone on the heads around the boot suffice? How about the spark plugs with the 4 point end (Bosch Platinum +4)? I was thinking that the extra points to arc would diminish the possibility of them arcing through the boot (Less Resistance and Distance for the Arc). Why is my plug wire sparking through the boot?
Electricity always takes the path of least resistance. The boot must have a tear in it.Use diaelectric grease when putting them on.Make sure you have the correct plugs with the correct gap.

After removing the covers you will see that after you remove the coil packs of each cylinders you will see that's were your plugs are. Note there is no cables for your car only coil packs.By the way you have a long time before this has to be done to your car.

I know the firing order for my 02 Taurus but How does it hook up to the coil pack and in what order, direction

Ever since messing with the tune up I've experienced a check engine light. I recently tried to change spark plug wires around and attempt different hook ups. Since then I haven't found a smooth running configuration and something towards the bottom of the car is getting very hot (RED HOT). After driving 3 miles at 30 mph it was smoking. Keep in mind the car wires are probably hooked up wrong. I know the firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6 but I don't know how to apply that know to hook it up properly and efficiently. I know that at the front it is 4 5 6 but how do I hook it up to the coil pack? And will this fix the excess heat that I've been noticing since messing with the wiring?I know the firing order for my 02 Taurus but How does it hook up to the coil pack and in what order, direction

    i have a 1998 chevy camaro

i just changed the plugs and wires yesterday.

so how many miles do i have til i need to again?

thanks ;)How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?
It all depends upon the brand and type of spark plugs you just installed in your cylinder heads. Inexpensive non-platinum or iridium plugs last 25 - 30,000 miles. Platinum plugs are good for 50,000 miles while long lasting iridium plugs will go 75 - 100,000 miles.

A couple of small tips the next time you install spark plugs: Wipe a small amount of %26quot;Never Seize%26quot; compound on the threads of the plugs before installation. Wipe a liberal amount of Silicone ignition grease inside each spark plug boot before snapping them back on the plugs. This step seals out moisture and allows easy removal of the boots from the plugs anytime in the future. The Never Seize prevents plug and cylinder head thread damage during removal or installation. Any NAPA or Carquest store has both of these inexpensive products.

Please consider a fresh set of AC-Delco or MSD ignition wires every 50,000 miles. As spark plug wires age electrical OHMS of resistance goes up inside the core and electrical dielectric insulation on the outside of the wire goes down. Don't consider cheap box-store ignition wires. ACDelco distributors or any Chevrolet dealer has AC-Delco ignition wires. autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com and autopartsgiant.com. has MSD ignition wires.

In plain English it's more difficult for the electrical energy to pass through the wire as they age. The high voltage tends to leak through the outer insulation jacket as the wire gets older. High under-hood heat and vibration deteriorates ignition wires. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?
I think for your car its every 100k mi. Don't quote me on that. For earlier models, I think like '95 and older its every 60k mi.

However, my personal opinion, as the odometer keeps going the gap on the spark plug is changing ever so slightly. You might want to check the gap every 10k. I used to own a '91 ford escort when I was going to college, I was tight on money and needed for my car to last. It was a POS but it worked. I would change my spark plugs every 10k mi. It was only like $10 - $15.

Country Boy, if you don't know what your talking about, stop. Electrical wires can last for years and years, just look at all the residential and commercial wiring. The current flow through the wires doesn't change over time. Heat, direct sunlight and vibration are what cause the insulation on the wires to deteriorate. However, this has no effect on the current flow just the ability to insulate the wire from arcing and protect it from the extreme heat. The only thing that damages the wires are the movement of the wires as you move them out of the way to work on the car. You can possibly break the wire or snap the connectors that are inside the boot and connect the wires to the spark plugs. There is no electricity that leaks out since the rubber is an insulator.

And the anti-seize gel does not protect the threads from damage against the spark plug or however you put it. Yes its good to put it on but to prevent water from going into the threads and the extreme heat vaporizing it causing rust to form between the spark plug and the cylinder head. If the spark plug does seize and you don't know what you're doing then you could damage the threads on the cylinder head manifold, but that could be repaired as well. How often am i supposed to change my spark plugs?

good luck...Is there any online information on how to change break pads?
Oh man it is easy to do. Once you do one it becomes clear how to do others atleast for disk brakes. I pressume that is what you have wince you spoke of turning rotors.

Go online do a search for changing brake pads or join a forum for your vehicle. Is there any online information on how to change break pads?
    First things first.

The article I'm giving you is a general how-to on how to do your brake pads. Turning your rotors is something you can't do at home. You need to take the rotors (which should come off in the process of changing the brake pads) to a shop and ask them IF they can be turned (if they have been turned before or if they are warped, you may not be able to turn them).

As for the plugs and wires, just follow your plug wires to the end, and voila! There are the plugs. Do those one at a time, and make sure you gap your plugs to the recommended gap. If you don't know the proper gap, you can ask your local parts guy for the proper gap, or look at the manufacturers label under the hood. Somewhere on there is a proper gap setting.

That being said, it is easier to go down to your parts place and get a Chilton's or Haynes manual. It will have the proper procedure to do both jobs, along with other handy tips to keep your car going. Is there any online information on how to change break pads?
Whats to know? To change the brake pads, remove the wheel, un-bolt the caliper (just 2 bolts), lift it off, push in the caliper piston, remove old pads, insert new pads (after lubing them appropriately) and re-install. Same as just about any pad slap on any car. Litterally after removing the wheel there are only 2 bolts to deal with.

The spark plugs and wires are also no big wup either. Just remove the top cover off the engine and everything is right there. If its a 2.4 DOHC (Quad 4) engine it will not have spark plug wires but rather hard boots that are built right into the cover. These are a frequent source of problems and should be replaced at the same time as the plugs.

If its a 2.2 engine you might as well replace that leaking valve cover gasket as long as you are in there. That's easy too, something like 11 or 12 bolts and she comes right out.

94' Saturn SW2, I gave it a turn up, wires plugs and now the tranny shifts better. How is that?

My automatic tranny was slipping into reverse most times, or would take 2 seconds to engage, before I gave the car a tune-up. Changed the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. How did that help the tranny shift better??94%26039; Saturn SW2, I gave it a turn up, wires plugs and now the tranny shifts better. How is that?
Other then if it was running poorly it should not effect the trans, if it was running bad then that is why. Maybe now the engine is happy so is the tranny. Maybe you should have a tranny service done too though if it is acting up, fluid and filter change. Good Luck94%26039; Saturn SW2, I gave it a turn up, wires plugs and now the tranny shifts better. How is that?
The computer determines when the tranny will shift up or down based on the engines ability to perform under the load. A tune up allows the engine to perform better. The computer recognizes it from the info it receives from the many sensors on the engine (oxygen, vacuum, idle...)

  • '96 Ford Taurus spark plug question!! please help!?

My 1996 Taurus had an odor of gasoline when the engine runs so i decided to change the spark plugs and wires. A day before that one of my wires was smoking, i thought that it was due to it touching something hot like the manifold. After changing the plugs and wires, i drove around the block and realized that it was smoking again. I then saw that the middle plug (cylinder 2) was smoking, i unplugged the wire off of the plug and there was blue smoke all over. It smelled like rubber! What is the problem? is it an electrical problem? How do i fix it?? Please help!!!%26039;96 Ford Taurus spark plug question!! please help!?

Where to find plug wire diagram or just help on plug wires for 83 Chevy Scottsdale 350 small block?

Can some one please help me? I'm trying to figure out the firing order or maybe I mean the schematic for my spark plug wires on an 83 Chevy Scottsdale 350 small block 4 wheel drive truck. While my husband was changing them I believe he accidentally got probably 2 of the wires confused. ( This is why beer and auto repair doesn't mix, lol. ) He said after he changed the plugs he then began changing the wires and did them one at a time but after completing the job the truck is now back firing like crazy. I asked him if he might have gotten some confused and he said, I guess it could be possible, but I don't see how since I did them one at a time. My other thought was maybe the gap on the plugs could be off. Anywo, he got pissed and says he's going to take it to the mechanic and I said, why?? I told him I could find a diagram for the plug wire schematic on-line and he isn't convinced I can find this. He won't go near the computer, lol. I know the answer is here somewhere, lol. Now I'm on a mission to find and do this myself. Seriously this is a mission! Please help my be hailed as a genius. lol Come on I know this isn't rocket science and the fix here is simple. And I do know a few things about cars and I love working on them and trying to understand them.

If I'm standing in front of the truck facing the engine and the firewall. Since there are 4 plug wires on the left and 4 plug wires on the right of the engine, can someone tell me what each plug number is from back to front, starting left to right while facing the firewall? I have done some searching and I keep seeing the firing order, if I'm looking right that is at, 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.

So would that mean while facing the firewall my first plug numbers on the left side (passenger side) starting closest to the back and working forward is 1,8,4,and then 3 would be closest to front of engine on the left side, then over to the driver side from the first plug closest to the firewall 6, then 5, then 7, and 2 would be at the closest to the front of the engine? Yes this is a guess on my part.

Ok now to the distributor cap, 8 wires and one for the coil wire, right. How do I figure this thing out to see if maybe one of the wires got put on there wrong? Can someone tell me what what number plug wire goes to what point on the distibutor cap? Working clockwise.... If you can be specific with the starting point.

I was hoping to find a picture diagram of the wiring schematic on-line somewhere but so far I've had no luck. Maybe someone can tell me where to find this??? Help please..... driver's side, front to back, are 1,3,5,7, passenger side, front to back are 2,4,6,8. firing order is 18436572 clockwise on the distributor. hope this helpsWhere to find plug wire diagram or just help on plug wires for 83 Chevy Scottsdale 350 small block?
The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.

On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.

The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

The firing order starts with the number one cylinder. We would connect the number one spark plug wire to the distributor cap terminal in the 6:30 position. Since the next cylinder in the firing order is 8 (passenger side rear), we connect the number 8 spark plug wire to the next distributor cap terminal (approximately 7:30 position) in the clockwise direction from number one. You need to be sure you continue the firing order in the clockwise direction around the chevy small block distributor cap from the last installed spark plug wire. Setting the rest of the firing order is just a matter of repetition. Be sure to count the spark plugs from front to back on each side of the motor to identify the correct cylinder number in the firing order.

The rest of the firing order wiring process is a matter of tracing out the spark plug wires and connecting them to the correct terminal. If you find it difficult to trace the spark plug wires you can use a little bit of tugging back and forth on each end of the spark plug wire. Simply pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug for the cylinder number you are working with, and while looking down the side of the motor, tug or jiggle the wire using quick short tugs without pulling it taught. Find the other end of the spark plug wire near the distributor, using the other hand, and you can then tug back and forth to be sure you have the right one. Don't pull them tight though. This exercise can be a little challenging since the front 2 spark plug wires on each side should be routed between the small block chevy motor mounts and the engine block and then through some spark plug wire clips at the bottom of the engine block, but at the top of the oil pan, then around the back of the cylinder heads and up to the chevy small block distributor cap. They won't be in your immediate view.

As a general rule, as I said earlier, follow a clockwise direction around the distributor cap when setting the firing order. This is much easier than following the cylinders along each side of the chevy small block motor, and trying to skip terminals on the distributor cap while locating the correct distributor cap terminal. It can get too confusing. If you get it wrong, you will likely have to pull them all out and start over to correct the firing order.

Being systematic about it and following the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order around the distributor cap is the best way to be sure you complete the job correctly.

With verryyy few exceptions, all Chevy V8's have used 18436572 as the firing order...number 1 cylinder is the front drivers side plug, and on the drivers side of the engine it is 1357, passenger side 2468...depending on how the distributor was originally installed, number one plug wire should be either one of the two posts on the cap that are over the shiny %26quot;dwell adjust door%26quot;, and the distributor rotation is clockwise looking down on it.Where to find plug wire diagram or just help on plug wires for 83 Chevy Scottsdale 350 small block?

    Mission accomplished!!!!

Firing order is 18436572. cylinders down the drivers side of the truck starting from the front are 1357 and down the passenger side starting from the front are 2468. looking at the distributor cap from straight up standing in front of the truck you will see an electrical connection pointing out the right side, go counter clockwise 3 towers, this is 1 (driver's front corner of the cap basically) working clockwise from 1 is then 843657 and 2

Check the firing order first as you may have put the wires back wrong . This is a common mistake. Then pull the plugs out to see if any are black or corroded. After that maybe it is the fuel mixture or bad wires.

Get your self a pair of rubber handled pliers or spark plug lead pliers, then with the engine runing, remove one lead at a time until you find that removing a lead will not change the idle. The one that doesn't change the idle will be the plug with an issue. Check the gap and check the ceramics to see if it's cracked.HOW CAN U TELL IF YOU BLEW A SPARK PLUG?

How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?

I am about to buy a 1974 Nova, it needs new points and I have never had to change points before, how do you do this, how hard is it, and where can I get points at? Also should I go ahead and change the spark plugs, distributor and spark plug wires as well, the car has been sitting since 2003, what do yall think? ThanksHow do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
Yes, you need new points, they are a major part of a tune-up..you can get a kit with the points, condenser and rotor at your parts store. you will need a dwell meter to set them after you install them.. it might help to take pictures as you go for when you put it back together..How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
i do not think you should even flirt with the idea of getting this car unless you are just up for wasting money!!!!!How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
Changing the points is easy, they are under the distributor cap, you will need a phillips screwdriver and an allen wrench that fits the socket. They will need to be set to the correct gap (usually around .030%26quot; but varies by engine).

There can be a lot of things that go bad when a car sits that long dry-rot, seizing parts, gas goes bad etc).

After a vehicle has been parked that long, it is a good idea to change the oil and filter, as condensation may have collected in the oil pan,no need to change the tranny fluid, it is also a good idea to remove each spark plug and put about a teaspoon of automatic transmission fluid in each cylinder, then replace the spark plugs and wait until the following day before attempting to start it, this is a precautionary measure in case any rust has formed on the piston rings and cyliner walls causing the rings to be stuck to the cylinder walls, worst case scenario you could actually break a piston ring depending on how much of a bond had been formed between your top ring and the cylinder walls, the tranny fluid left overnight will seep down around the rings and lubricate them as well as losen any possible rust, other than that just make sure all your fluids are up to level, when it starts you will have an initial cloud of smoke from the exhaust until the tranny fluid is cleared from the cylinders, this shouldn't take but a minute, after you have it running, you'll want to do a full tune-up, if you have problems with it starting and then dying, you may have to remove the carburetor and clean out all the jets and fuel passages because after sitting for that long, the fuel has definitely gone bad, take a sniff in the fuel tank, it will smell like varnish, maybe it would be a good idea to add several gallons of fresh gasoline to the fuel tank before you even attempt the initial startup. I hope this has helped you out.How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
You should get a Chilton manual.Library? 1974 Nova... Nice choice. I want to put a 572 in a Nova. But I don't really know much about repair so I just use repair guides. I've spent an hour searching for a free one with no luck, but here is one of the cheapest ones.

The guide shows you how to disassemble, reassemble, repair, and how to maintain anything and everything.

I really hope that helps. It was the best I could do.How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
Is your library card up to date? See the link for a good no special tools way of getting the job done. The explanation involved complete distributor replacement and not the points but the physical out and in of the point set is easy. From that explanation just pick out what you need. The important thing missing is setting the gap. Put the point rubbing block on the high point of the cam (the widest full open position) and set the gap at .017%26quot; using a screwdriver in a slot that you should see that a gentile twisting prying effort will change the setting. Confused? If so then a trip to the library to take out a repair manual should help. Automotive technicians with experience go to school for around 6 weeks to learn the fine points and YA! is good but no substitute. But if you are the mechanically inclined sort and give it an honest try with a DIY manual then you can get it done without having to use a timing light and dwell meter. It would be a pain to buy those for how little you would use them.

Lastly, 1974 is like 22 years older than anyone should be buying if they don't have many thousands to spend on restoration. There are plenty of 1996 and newer vehicles available for under a grand and modern engines are way more reliable than older engines. How do you change the points on a 1974 Nova?
i've never heard of %26quot;changing the points%26quot; but yea you should change the oil, spark plugs, and the spark plug wires, only if they look bad.

Some tools, patience and ingenuity. On those cars you can not reach them from the bottom. They are way too up there to reach. I used to climb on the engine carefully and try to reach on the back. Break the torque loose and back up by hand. Install the same way, by hand with the socket so you can reach and a small extension. If you can get like 2 full turns by hand you are on the thread if not you are cross threated. Is all by feeling. Try to tight them by hand, so you know they are seated right and finish with a 1/4 of the ratchet.

the 2 front engine mounts in front of the radiator on top( they look like dog bones) have to be removed. just take out 1 of the bolts. you'll see they have another hole reinstall the bolt in that hole. Hey everyone I have been posting a lot about my car lately and I solved my spark issue when I changed out the engine computer I have a Mitsubishi Eclipse 1996, 2.0 L, DOHC Non Turbo. Well when checking all the spark plug wires that ran to the ignition coil I found out only one of the 4 spark plug wires were actually getting spark from the ignition coil. So I went out and bought a new set of spark plug wires and once I tested these only 2 of the 4 spark plug wires were getting spark from the ignition coil. So now I went out and bought a new ignition coil pack and replaced that and it is still having the same issue. Could someone please let me know how to solve this problem with getting the other 2 to get spark?Car only getting spark on two out of four Spark Plug Wires can someone help?

You have checked the %26quot;wires%26quot; themselves, - and they are all good? New ignition cables are not %26quot;wire%26quot;,they are a thin carbon resistor material, and easily damaged, - and I have seen new ones from box bad! Assuming these are good, then next thing I would check is %26quot;reluctor vanes%26quot; on ignition sensor pickup! These are the Little things that pass in front of pickup as engine turns (in old days the equivalent was the %26quot;lobes%26quot; on distributor that opened the ignition points)! I am not expert on how ignition pulses are delivered on this car, but the principle is about the same on about everything now . there is a pickup somewhere that the pulses to ignition group comes from. If you only have one coil then there is a distribution system, if you have a %26quot;cap%26quot; on a distributor (resembles old time systems), the check cap inside for carbon tracks, -- if you have individual coils then it all comes from the pickup on crank somewhere! i,am kinda handicapped when it comes to foreign cars but i,ll take a stab at it. you said it had a coil pack and you put a new coil pack on and still won,t start. what about the module, maybe it,s shorting out. look under the cap, there should be a pick-up there. maybe it,s bad.

A friend changed what he thought was the number 3 - but the numbering must have been misinterpreted, because it wasn't the 3. Changing spark plugs is like our monthly maintenance on this beast %26amp; I hope once this one gets done it will settle down...thanksHow are 2003 Ford Expedition spark plugs numbered?
Scullycj is correct about the way the cylinders are numbered. Cylinder 3 is the 3rd cylinder from the front on the passenger side. Or interpreted another way, the 2nd cylinder on the passenger side from the firewall. If changing spark plugs seems like monthly maintenance, you obviously have other issues causing the miss. One last, but very noteworthy to mention tip. Use ONLY Ford/Motorcraft spark plugs and other electrical parts in order to avoid headaches. Doing this job more than once is probably no fun as you already know. Hope this helps. How are 2003 Ford Expedition spark plugs numbered?

If it is a straight 6, the front plug is 1 and the rear is 6. If it is a v8, the plus number 1-4 on the right side and 5-8 on the left side. The cylinder number should be cast on the intake runner to that cylinder. At least they used to do that.

98 Windstar 3.0L V6 (12 valve Vulcan). I need to know how to change the spark plugs. The front 3 are easy to get out but how do I get at the back ones/ Also I'm changing the wires, any help would be great. How do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?
You need to pull the intake cover off, but don't undo the fuel rails. Get all the hoses secured out of the way. You should be able to reach the plugs that way, but you won't be able to see 2 of them. Use a mirror, a good light, and an offset pivoting head ratchet and 16mm deep socket. If there is visible debris around the plugs, blow it off before starting, and give the plugs a good spray of penetrating oil an hour before starting to remove them. Be extremely careful, because in the awkward position you'll be in, it's easy to break an old plug (not a devastating situation, but a pain just the same), or you could cross thread a new plug and strip the threads in the head ( a terribly devastating and expensive situation). How do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?
never worked on a winstar. you might try getting to them from under the car, there's more clearance there sometimes, other than that just squeeze back there and pull them. Definitely change the wires ONE AT A TIME, this way your sure to get them in the right firing order. so change a plug then the wire that goes with it. not all at the same time. good luckHow do I change the spark plugs on my 98 Windstar?

Remove the front wheels and go into the fender well. You will need to remove the cover and you can see the spark plugs.

How do I tell if the spark plug wires are connected properly?

The vehicle is a 91 Chevy c1500 with a 350 EFI (throttle body) engine. It has almost 150k miles. I have had a very bad skip for some time. I changed fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor, and distributor cap. I have also run a fuel system cleaner through it. Since replacing the last three things the skip has become worse leading me to believe the wires are connected wrong. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks...How do I tell if the spark plug wires are connected properly?
check the wires to make sure they are conected properly and not loose, If you changed the distributor you may have put it in out of time and will need to set the timing on the engine, or pull it back out and reinstall it correctly, it's real easy to check it but you'll need a compression gauge to find out when number one cylinder is at TDC then work from there. Get a manual for it, it would take to long to explain the steps here. hopefully it's just a loose wire, you may want to check the distributor cap to make sure it's tight, there is a notch that the cap sits into on the distributor, if it's not in right and is sitting crooked that can cause problems. How do I tell if the spark plug wires are connected properly?
as long as they made a ''Click%26quot; noise when you snapped them in then they are in good.. did you gap the spark plugs before you installed them? if they didnt come pre-gapped and you installed them without gapping it would cause the problem to get worse... that may be your problem...J-rodHow do I tell if the spark plug wires are connected properly?
did u replace the wires one at a time so as not to get them crossed ??How do I tell if the spark plug wires are connected properly?
a couple of suggestions, open the hood while engine is running, listen for a electrical snapping sound, spark maybe jumping to ground from a lead wire that connects to spark plug.sometimes if you try this at night time (dark out) you may see a spark jumping.get a good pair of insulated pliers (ZAP YOU IF NOT WELL INSULATED) and gently pull off 1 plug lead at a time to see(hear) if you notice any difference on how it idles, each time 1 is pulled you should notice a difference in the smoothness at idle,be care full high energy ignition can give you one H of a jolt.

just follow the spark plug wires from the distributor to the end of the wire and at the end is the spark plug if it looks hard to get at then it will be. if you can see it then it should be easy to access. and for the wires you just simply unplug them and plug the new ones in

They make a wire boot tool, keeps you from ripping up the wires, but if you're replacing them, just tug them up.

You'll need an extension and the proper socket... I suggest taping the socket and extension together so the socket don't pop off down in the hole... and use a SPARK PLUG socket which has the rubber insulator which holds the plug... everything should come out just fine. Good Luck! How do you access the lower end of the spark plug wires on a 2003 s-10? they%26039;re waaay down there.?

you'll need a swivel spark plug socket, and a 16mm wrench to access the 3 spark plug by the steering shaft, you may be able to jack up the truck and access some plug from the tire well, its best you allow vehicle to cool down so you don't burn your self on the hot exhaust, when u remove spark plug boot use a twisting motion to unstick them from the spark plug,so they don't break if you're planning to reuse wiresHow do you access the lower end of the spark plug wires on a 2003 s-10? they%26039;re waaay down there.?

What is the correct spark plug wire placement on a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge with 3.0L V6 FI OHV engine?

Haynes Repair Manual 36071 shows the coil pack as:

    3//4

    2//6

    1//5

, as you were looking at it from the front of the vehicle. It shows the spark plugs as:

    3//6

    2//5

    1//4

, as looking at the vehicle from the front.

This is NOT how this vehicle was plugged in when I went about to change the spark plugs and wires. The 6, 5, 4 plugs were plugged into the 3, 2, 1 spots on the coil pack, and the 3,2,1 plugs to the 5,6,4 coil pack spots. The vehicle was running fine though?!

This pickup has about 122,000 miles on it, and I've only had it a couple of months. The spark plugs I took out were autolite, so I assume the previous owner had changed his plugs at least once since they weren't motorcraft.

Every DIY instruction I can find online, any manual I have, and anything in forums I read suggest that in Ford Rangers 1995 and later, this truck was wired totally backwards with the spark plug wires yet was running ok somehow. The coil pack is motorcraft, so I doubt it was switched somehow. What is the correct spark plug wire placement on a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge with 3.0L V6 FI OHV engine?
If the truck ran fine I would put the wires on exactly like you took them off.One at a time. Getting to the coil pack. They could have used a differant coil. You can call ford with the motorcraft part number and confirmed that this is the right coil pack for your truck, but really as long as it runs good why bother.

Should I change out the spark plug wires also? I looked and spark plugs are relatively inexpensive so I was thinking why not, but will I be able to tell really about improved gas mileage or how well it runs?I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. How often should I change out my spark plugs?
If your 2002 Accord has the original spark plugs and wires, you should change them out. They now make spark plugs and wires that last 100,000 miles, but you have to be careful. If you leave spark plugs in that long and they're exposed to the elements, you may have a very tough time getting them out without breaking them.

Changing out the plugs and wires may make a big difference in gas mileage or the way your car runs, but then again it may not. This is one of those recurring maintenance issues with cars (parts wear out, that's just the way it is). If changing out the plugs and wires doesn't have the desired effect, you may want to consider putting in a new fuel filter too. It's a relatively inexpensive job that usually pays big dividends in older vehicles.I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. How often should I change out my spark plugs?
105,000 mi is the required change interval along with the timing belt.

There is nothing wrong with changing the plugs sooner. I did mine on my 2002 Accord at about 75,000 may have improved my mileage a little and it ran a little smother but its not necessary. Make sure you get the exactly the plug that is called for.I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. How often should I change out my spark plugs?
Spark plugs don't deteriorate fast but I would recommend for you to replace them every ten to fifteen thousand miles along with new cables. The change in the miles per gallon is not going to be a noticeable difference. Never the less, in the long run any difference is good.I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. The year 1960 called...it wants its automobile maintenance interval back.I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. How often should I change out my spark plugs?
I had an '82 ford with a 302. My first set of plugs went 80,000 miles. I had a 97 Toyota tacoma. I replaced my first set of plugs at 130,000. If your engime skips when it is damp or misfires, It is time for new plugs and wires. My rule is %26quot; If it ain't broke, don't fix it.%26quot; Never remove your plugs from the engine when cold. If you do this with an aluminum head, The aluminum threads will come out with the plug. Aluminum has twice the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel and transfers heat four times as fast. Warm it up, shut it down, and immediately remove them.I have a 2002 Honda Accord (4cyl.) with 98k miles. How often should I change out my spark plugs?
Every 20,000-30,000 miles is the safest way to go. You'll keep everything in good working order now that you're almost at 100K miles. You'll also need to pull the wires and check out the ends for dirt/rust.

How often should you change your spark plugs?

I have a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, with 52,000k. Is it time for me to change the plugs and wires? If so, is there a certain plug that is better than others? Or are they all the same? How often should you change your spark plugs?
Spark plugs in modern vehicles are platinum tipped and do not require maintenance as often. I have seen as many as 120,000 miles out of a set of plugs before they start causing problems, but they can start breaking down as early as 60,000 miles. Your particular vehicle lists a spark plug change interval at 100,000 miles. I would always suggest changing the plugs with what was original from the factory, as this is the plug that the engine was designed with. If you are not having any engine concerns, I would go by the schedule provided in your owner's manual. How often should you change your spark plugs?
If your trailblazer is still getting the same gas mileage and no drop off of engine performance, I would not change the plugs yet. The factory is claiming that you should not need to change the plugs and wires until the vehicle reaches100,000 miles. I have not had to change my 1999 GM vehicle's plugs and wires yet. I have not noticed any drop-off in performance or gas mileage. I do on a routine basis check the condition of the ignition coil wires to check for possible wear. If you feel that you do need to change your plugs and wires always use AC Delco parts for your GM vehicle. I have found good success using these parts. How often should you change your spark plugs?
Are you sure that this vehicle has wires? If it does then I would change them every 100,000 miles. I've usually traded in a car before I've every replaced the wires. As long as they don't get damaged, I'd leave them alone. The plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles and the best bet is what came on the vehicle originally. I don't trust the 100,000 mile tune up bit. Even new plugs wear out and emissions and fuel economy will suffer. How often should you change your spark plugs?
Check your owners manual. Latter engines go longer with out plug changes up to 100,000. Look for AC plugs for that car. (or denso since AC no longer makes their own plugs) Wires would only need to be changed if there is a problem. Spark jumping, or to much resistance in wire. How often should you change your spark plugs?
Yes, it's good time to change plugs, but use only those that are specified for this car - buy them from the dealer. It might be OK to change just plugs alone if you don't have any problems (e.g cracks, misfiring) with the wires right now.How often should you change your spark plugs?

The Trailblazer uses coil on plug ignition, there are no wires. I have 2002 Trailblazer with about the same amount of miles and I don't believe the plugs have ever been changed, and aren't in bad condition to need replacement. Your best bet would be to inspect the plugs for buildup or excessive wear on the electrodes before buying new ones.

ok i,ll try to guide you through this. first you need a 3/8 drive ratchet and a 5/8 plug socket and maybe extension. pull 1 plug wire off at a time so you don,t get the firing order mixed up. take the plug out, gage the new 1 and put it in and tighten it but just snug it. now take the plug wire off and measure it with 1 of the new wires and install the new wire of the same length. just keep doing the same way with the rest of the plugs and wires but only 1 at a time. s-10 you say? ha, ha. i changed a set of plugs in 1 of those awhile back and it,s a bear to get to some of them. you might get to some of them by using a swivel on the socket.Changing spark plugs and wires on a 2003 chevrolet s10. how to do it my self?

    Hi,

As u know that is pretty high mileage so don't expect it to run as smooth as it used to. There will be some variance in cyl. compressions, etc., etc. That being said your other answer about changing the plugs every two years was corect unless one or two cycl.are fouling the plugs sooner. One quick %26amp; dirty way to check the plug wires is to start the engine on a dark night %26amp; open the hood %26amp; look around(keep your hands back) you will be surprised. How do I know when to change the wires and spark plugs on my 95 Pontiac Bonneville?

easily done by perfoming this wear gloves start your car up if a spark is missin your car will drive sorta sluggish or run sluggish but here the step start the car pull out one spark wire at a time when you remove the wires it will run even shitier or stall cuz its one cylinder more that not sparking put it bac in till you pull one out that doesnt seem too have an effect could be plugs or wire if the plug is new make sure its not cracked. if good change your wireI just changed the spark plugs/wires gaped to .054. Sounds like one cylinder is not firing? How can I?
i used to do it the way described, but my code scanner now informs me and it doesnt have to be a bad miss. also says what rpm etc.I just changed the spark plugs/wires gaped to .054. Sounds like one cylinder is not firing? How can I?
Old guy put it pretty neatly and it's good advice. That's the simplest way to do it.

I've been pondering more about why you got the misfire/no fire problem. It could be a bad wire or bad connection of a wire. But first, check plugs. Could be that you have a defective plug. It could even just be that one plug has a little oil or gunk on it so that the path of least resistance for the spark is on the outside instead of down at the electrode where it ought to be. Easiest way to fix: with motor off and leads off, wipe the plugs with a clean cloth.

Or...it could be that your new plugs might not be the correct length -- on the %26quot;inside%26quot; part below the seating gasket. If your new plugs are a fraction longer than the old ones then you can have the nasty problem of the piston heads making contact with the electrodes, or just one doing this if that plug is screwed in to just the place where the %26quot;bend%26quot; in the electrode is most downwards relative to the cylinder and allowing contact.

So I'd check the plug lengths if you haven't checked that beforehand, to make sure they are exactly the right ones. The only sure way to know is to take out one of the new ones and measure it by direct comparison with the old ones. Of course, if you happen to find that your new plug's electrode/gap has been knocked out of line, then you know that they're clearly too long. Take em out and get new ones that are the right length.

Anyways, if all plugs are okay and the right length but you still have one that's not firing (and assuming the car was fine before), then that suggests a bad wire or connection of the wire.

Nobody turned up the idle before, to compensate for it running poorly because it needed a tuneup, did they? If so, then you need to turn the idle back down now.

I want to change the spark plugs and wires on a 2002 honda accord se .how difficult is this?

    Not hard.

If you are going to change the plugs and wires and you haven't done it before the easiest way is one at the time.

That way you don't get your plugwires crossed up.

You make sure that way you route the wires the same way you took them off.

Make sure the plugs are gapped to the specs. Probably shown on a tag under the hood.

Blow out the dirt around each plug on the head before you remove it.

Then when placing the new plug in don't try to force it into the threads.

Once you get it started it will go in fairly easy. Tighten but don't try to break it.

Then just connect the plug wire.

Push til you feel it snap into place.

Remember just do them one a the time and take your time.I want to change the spark plugs and wires on a 2002 honda accord se .how difficult is this?
its not, go to ur auto shop store buy spark plug that match ur car-there in the owners maneuel (make sure the space is matched too.). get those and take a wrech and unscrew the plugs and the then screww those in. they are located on the side of ur engine,( depending if its 4 wheel or not). BUT make sure the wire that u toke off the old plug gose in the new plug and in that same hole.

How tough is it to change out the wires and spark plugs in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am?

I have a private mechanic who wants to charge me $200 to do this maintenance. Is that a comparable price to what I'd see at a repair shop/dealer? He claims he's working with me and offering a deal.

    Your opinion is appreciated.

Your expertise is invaluable:)How tough is it to change out the wires and spark plugs in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am?
Well the parts are probably 60 or 70 dollars with platinum plugs and decent wires so he is charging 130 to 140 dollars for an hour of labor.

That is still a bit high but if you have an engine compartment that require a lot of items removed to get at some of the plugs then he is probably about right. How tough is it to change out the wires and spark plugs in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am?
it all depends on how accessible the plugs and wires are. In my 2000 Intrigue, the front 3 plugs are fairly easy to get to but the back three you either have to be a contortionist or have special equipment. It's worth having a mechanic do it.

$200 sounds like a good price if that includes the spark plugs and wires. How tough is it to change out the wires and spark plugs in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am?
If you have a 2.4 in it it is very very easy to do plugs. I suggest using bosch platinum +2. they are about 4 dollars a plus and i have them in my grand am gt 2.4. Wires are just a a harness to harness system. Do it yourself just go to autozone.com for the instructions. Tools will cost less than 10 dollars at wal mart for a small ratchet set. good luck.

So it worked fine for a while and then suddenly didn't work. Perhaps you didn't get the coil wire plugged far enough into the distributor cap, and from engine vibration it worked out far enough to cause what you see, or rather don't see. Make sure the wires go in far enough to %26quot;click%26quot;.How come my car wont start after changing my spark plug wires?
Remove and clean your battery cable connectors and the battery posts with a wire brush as shown in the video below. You have a bad connection at the battery.

Sounds like one of your plug cables is not firmly connected to either the plug or the distributor. Even if they feel tight pull them off and double check. Sometimes the metal connection acceptor inside the rubber end get bent and don't make a good connection. How come my car wont start after changing my spark plug wires?
make sure your wires are connected completly.

Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?

I am changing the spark plugs and need to rotate the engine to reach the back plugs. How do I do this? Is it a one man job? I do not have a lot of auto repair experience.Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?
Transverse mounted engine? Apply parking brake and place transmission in 'neutral' (engine off of course). You will see a 'dog bone' engine mount in center by radiator. Remove the back bolt (I think). Place a bar in the lift bracket and rock the motor forward enough to place the bolt back in the next hole. This will tip the engine forward enough to reach the back 3 spark plugs. It's still a tight fit, but it helps.

Hope this helps.Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?
you will also need a thin walled socket to fit the plug regular sockets will not fit between shield and plug

Just use a small angled pry bar to remove the 'heat shields' that are around the plug. These help shield the spark plug wire boot from the heat given off by the exh manifold.

Chilton Manuals are worthless. Purchase a Haynes manual.

DONT monky around with the engine,it's a pain and it will take a while be sure engine is cool and i also sugest the best manual you can buy at your local auto store,it's called Haynes and it's like $20 after taxes,or http://haynes.com take your time and just take a break when you get frustrated, cause trust me you will i did my dads plugs a few months ago same engine and yeah it's a *****.Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?
Gosh, if you got to take the engine out just to do a tune up why don't you just take it to Sears for the 19.95 special.Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?
The 3100 SFI is a very common power platform for GM, it's been in many many models and is still being produced today. By no means do you need to %26quot;rotate%26quot; the engine to get to the back plugs. I did get a good chuckle from the comment however ;)

It may seem impossible but I can assure you it's not. I've personally changed the plugs on at least 30 of those suckers. Some vehicles are more difficult than others (the 3100 in a Chevy Malibu tops them all).

You'll need the right tools for the job of course. A swivel attachment for your ratchet (driver) can be of great assistance when trying to reach plugs on the back side of an engine. Other than that you'll have to fight with it a little bit. If I recall climbing into the engine compartment (knees on the intake) makes it a bit easier to get your tools/hands onto the back side of the engine. You can also attach the spark plug socket to the plug first and then attach the ratchet, this is often times easier than trying to attach the ratchet/socket at the same time.

Good luck...and please, don't ever try and %26quot;rotate%26quot; an engine ;)

Spark Plug Wires on 2000 S-10 2.2 engine.?

I have a 2000 S-10 2.2L 4 cyl. engine. It isn't running well and doesn't have any power. I changed the fuel filter and spark plugs, but my 1 spark plug wire is in bad shape. If this is my problem, how hard is it to change this wire by myself? Keep in mind, this engine is a distributorless engine. The plug wires connect directly to the ignition coils. I tried to follow the plug wires, but couldn't get to the end of them. If someone can tell me where the ignition coil is located maybe it will help. Thanks.Spark Plug Wires on 2000 S-10 2.2 engine.?
i have a 99 s-10 and my coil packs are---

go to the front passenger tire, look staight in above th tire and push the piece of rubber( you will see what im talking about) out of the way and the coilpacks are straight ahead

the plug wires are a pain to feed down through, but its not that hard

just make sure you take a piece of tape and write 1-2-3-4 on each end of the wires so you know which one is which and where they go

and my coilpacks are labeled 1-2-3-4

I have a 1986 oldsmobile 98 and how long will it take to change spark plugs and wires and the coil?

my car wont start so they think its the wires and the coil but one person think it might be that the timing is off... i dont see how that can be if i drove to the store and my car started find but when i was going to leave the store the car wouldnt start...the battery is good, it hae gas, any ideals what it might beI have a 1986 oldsmobile 98 and how long will it take to change spark plugs and wires and the coil?
If your timing is off, then you car will start but run badly.

As to how long: It would take the pro's about 1 to 2 hours to do all that. You can give yourself another 1 or 2 hours if this is your first time.

As to why your car is NOT starting, you are not giving us enough info as to why. Was your car running rough before it died? Did you recently have any work done? Did you see any smoke in the exhaust when it was running. etc.

Good Luck.I have a 1986 oldsmobile 98 and how long will it take to change spark plugs and wires and the coil?
Get an engine diagnosis test done on your vehicle. As far as the plug wires and ignition coil goes, this is a real simple job to do. All you have to do is get a wiring diagram of how to set the firing pattern of the ignition distributor and start replacing the wires one at a time until done. You can get this information for free at any auto parts store or online.I have a 1986 oldsmobile 98 and how long will it take to change spark plugs and wires and the coil?
My guess is its probably not the spark plugs or the spark plug wires. Because not all of them would go bad at once if a couple of them are bad it would run real rough but it would start.

The possibilities could be a coil or your ignition module. Generally you'll have an intermittent problem before they totally go out, but, its still possible that they can.

First check to see if you're getting spark to the plugs. Take off one spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver into the end. Set it very close to the valve cover or something else that's grounded and have someone turn over the engine. You should see and hear a spark. No spark means either a bad coil or bad computer module. Another possibility is the center wire to the coil could be bad which would cause a really weak spark to all the plugs causing it not to start.
